H3: Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1 — Arrival in Gondar: Historical Exploration

Fly or drive to Gondar via Addis Ababa. Known as the “Camelot of Africa,” Gondar is a historic town full of imperial grandeur. Spend the day exploring its royal castles, especially the Fasil Ghebbi (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), and visit Debre Berhan Selassie Church, renowned for its ceiling covered in painted angels.

Why it matters: This day serves as a cultural introduction to Ethiopia before entering the wilderness — and gives your body time to begin adjusting to the altitude.

Overnight: Hotel in Gondar

Day 2 — Gondar to Debark to Sankaber: Entering the Park

Drive approximately 3 hours from Gondar to Debark, the gateway town to Simien Mountains National Park. At the park office you will register, obtain permits, and meet your guide, scout, and mule handlers. After formalities, drive or begin trekking to Sankaber Camp (approx. 3,200 m elevation). A short warm-up hike of 1.5–3 hours follows.

Highlights: First encounter with Gelada baboons; sweeping views of the deep Simien escarpment valleys.

Overnight: Camping at Sankaber

Day 3 — Sankaber to Geech Camp: Full-Day Hike

A 5–6 hour trek through rolling highlands, open grasslands, and dramatic cliff edges. Visit Jinbar Waterfall, one of the highest waterfalls in Ethiopia. Expect to pass giant Lobelia plants and encounter large troops of Geladas along the route.

Why it’s special: A moderate day designed to build trekking endurance and allow gradual acclimatization.

Overnight: Camping at Geech Camp (3,600 m)

Day 4 — Day Hike to Imet Gogo Viewpoint

An optional but highly recommended day hike from Geech to Imet Gogo (3,926 m). The round-trip takes 4–5 hours and rewards hikers with 360-degree panoramic views of jagged peaks and deep valleys — one of the most photogenic spots in the entire park.

Why it matters: Continued acclimatization before tackling higher altitudes the following days.

Overnight: Return to Geech Camp

Day 5 — Geech to Chennek via Inatye and Buhit Peaks

A long, more challenging hike of 7–8 hours. The route passes over Inatye Peak (4,070 m) and Buhit Peak (4,430 m) before descending to Chennek Camp (3,600 m).

Highlights: Prime habitat for the endangered Walia Ibex on rocky outcrops; Lammergeiers (bearded vultures) frequently soar overhead.

Overnight: Camping at Chennek

Day 6 — Chennek to Ambiko Village

A long day of 8–10 hours, including a steep descent into low valleys followed by a climb to Ambiko. The route crosses rivers and passes through local farmland. Hikers pass through small Amhara villages, offering an authentic glimpse of traditional Ethiopian rural life.

Overnight: Camping near Ambiko Village

Day 7 — Summit Day: Ras Dashen (4,543 m)

An early start for the summit of Ras Dashen, Ethiopia’s highest peak. The ascent and return take 6–8 hours over steep, rocky terrain. On a clear day, the summit offers breathtaking views across the entire Ethiopian highlands.

This is the highlight of the trek — a genuine achievement and an unforgettable experience.

Overnight: Return to Ambiko Camp

Day 8 — Ambiko to Sona

A scenic hike through farmland and remote, quiet landscapes. Moderate difficulty — a welcome recovery day after the Ras Dashen summit. Sona is a beautiful and tranquil campsite.

Overnight: Camping at Sona

Day 9 — Sona to Mekarebya or Mulit

Hike down through lower valleys into warmer terrain. Stop in small villages, interact with local families, and enjoy a less mountainous, culturally rich final trekking day.

Overnight: Camping in Mekarebya or Mulit village

Day 10 — Return to Gondar

Meet your vehicle at the nearest road access point (typically Adi Arkay or another exit point). Drive back to Gondar (approximately 5–6 hours depending on exit location). Relax at a hotel or continue onward to Addis Ababa.

Important Practical Notes

  • Acclimatization: This itinerary is designed with multiple days to adapt before the Ras Dashen summit. Do not rush or skip acclimatization days.
  • Required support staff: All treks in the park must include a licensed local guide and an armed scout. Muleteers carry gear and supplies on mules.
  • Best season: October through April (dry season with clearer skies).
  • Physical preparation: Moderate to challenging difficulty. Prior hiking experience and cardiovascular fitness are strongly recommended.
  • Altitude: The trek reaches above 4,500 m. Altitude sickness is a real risk; inform your guide of any symptoms immediately.
